Getting ready to start

Well, it's the day before we leave and I've got a million things to do. I got the car serviced and it’s new, so I'm thinking there should be no problems there. Google maps says it’s 504 miles from my house to the Hotel. It estimates 10 hours 20 minutes to get there. I wonder if that counts bathroom stops.

I took many long trips with my kids when they were young. There is something about being cooped up inside a car for a long time that facilitates conversation. There isn’t any TV or game boys to distract and eventually meaningful conversations happens. I’ve learned a lot about my kids from those trips.

Google is showing that it is 88 degrees in San Diego, it's 51 here in San Francisco. I’m going to have to make a pretty extreme temperature adjustment. I'm hoping to get out of here early in the morning. That way maybe we would hit LA just after lunch when traffic is not too bad. But we are not morning people so, well, we will see....

Shawn and Jazmyn are going with me. Shawn, my oldest grandson, will be my navigator. I remember following along the map as my father drove to Montana. It was fun to watch for the up coming cities and it helped to pass the time. I was thinking that Shawn might like to do the same. I do have a GPS unit on the dash just in case we need it.

I got Shawn a cell phone so he could call me if we get separated. He picked up how to use it very fast. He called me 10 times and text me many times in the first two days he has had it. Hopefully, that will make it easier for everyone to keep in touch.

I bought two encyclopedic books on Comic heroes. They are pretty extensive. I thought it would be a good introduction to the people they will see in costume at Comic Con. Attendees go all out to create costumes to emulate their favorite characters. Last year I saw this incredible Bumble Bee ( a transformer ) costume. He must have spent all year working on it. There is a costume contest where everyone gets to show off what they did.

Shawn is a huge Star Wars fan. We plan to go to Comic Con on Friday the 24th of July. That is Star Wars day and should have a lot of events for him. Jazmyn is my little artist. She loves to drawn pictures. Comic Con is all about art. The comic artists will be there in large numbers. I'm wondering if Jazmyn will connect with them. She will have the chance to meet and talk with some of them. They are usually there giving talks and signing autographs. I don’t think Jaz is all that interested in

Well we are off ……………..
